CRAFTING THE INFOGRAPHIC NARRATIVE

Why is it important to craft a compelling story for our infographic to share our research? In his chapter entitled, “The Art of Storytelling,” Krum argues, “Good infographic design is about storytelling by combining data visualization design and graphic design. Many of the good infographics follow a simple three-part story format: introduction, key message, and conclusion” (27).

Crafting a narrative around a problem or crisis related to your research is the key to grabbing your audience’s attention. Alexander says, “Stories almost always pack an emotional response...what kind of story is there without some problem or struggle? It is, after all, easy to dislike a story for its lack of significant problem, which leaves an impression of dullness or emotional flatness...If something is easy, there’s no tension, and without tension, there’s little incentive for an audience to keep watching.” (7). Thus, beginning your story with your research question or adding a personal anecdote on why you are interested in pursuing your research is essential in order to grab your audience and engage them in your research.
